In 1937 China, for the period of the second Sino-Japanese war, a mortician, John ( Christian Bale ) arrives at a Catholic meeting-house in Nanjing to prepare a parson for burial. Upon arrival he finds himself the isolated adult among a group of priory girl students and prostitutes from a nearby brothel. When he finds himself in the unwanted post of protector of both groups from the horrors of the invading Japanese host, he discovers the meaning of devotion with loss and honor.
